Laval thumps women’s rugby
THE UNIVERSITY OF Ottawa women’s rugby team had a tough road game on Oct. 10, losing 47-3 to the nationally fourth-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (5-0) in Québec City.
The Gee-Gees’ only offence in the match came from first-year fly half Élodie Lebeau, who had a successful penalty kick towards the end of the second-half. The three points were not clearly not enough to derail the Rouge et Or, however, as Laval entered the game having outscored their opponents 214-20 in four games.
The loss drops the Gees to 3-2, good for third place in the Quebec Student Sports Federation. Ottawa trails Concordia (4-1) for second place and home-field advantage in the playoffs. The Gees host the Stingers on Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Matt Anthony Field.

Women’s basketball nets pre-season wins
GEARING UP FOR the beginning of the regular season in November, the University of Ottawa women’s basketball team played a pre-season game at home on Oct. 4 against the Université de Québec à Montreal Carabins. The team then travelled to Montreal on Oct. 9 to play an exhibition against the Concordia Stingers. The Gee-Gees won both games, defeating the Carabins 72-62 and holding off the Stingers 64-60. Ottawa’s pre-season record improves to 3-1 following the wins.
The Gee-Gees got off to a fast start against the Carabins, building a 37-23 lead by halftime. Leading the way for Ottawa was third-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley, who finished the game with an eyebrow-raising 29 points and eight rebounds.
“We showed progress,” said Gee-Gees head coach Andy Sparks in an interview with Sports Services following the match. “The girls are going in the right direction.”
Ottawa’s leading scorer in the game against the Stingers was fourth-year guard Melina Wishart, who led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds. Wishart and fourth-year guard Kelly Weir will be the oldest returning starters to the team this year. The Gees will kick off the regular season on Nov. 3 at Carleton University.

Men’s soccer to host exhibition game
FOR THE FIRST time in three years, the University of Ottawa men’s soccer team will host a home game at the Sports Complex. On Oct. 24, they will play the Bishop’s Gaiters in an exhibition game at 3:30 p.m. at Matt Anthony Field. Students are invited to watch the game free of charge.
“We just want to offer the students one home game to see the skill level of our team,” said fourth-year midfielder and team manager Marc-André Paulin, in a phone interview with the Fulcrum.
Unlike the women’s team at the U of O, the men’s team is non-varsity and does not compete under Canadian Interuniversity Sport or Ontario University Athletics. As a competitive club, the team’s season consists of exhibition matches against soccer teams from other universities. The men’s soccer team at Bishop’s is also a competitive club.
