Desperation is never attractive when it comes to love and it can sometimes be difficult to not come off as desperate when trying to make the first move. Admit it, the thought has crossed your mind to start a conversation with that one person sitting in your class, but you have nothing to say when your chance comes. The fear of rejection is pretty real, and could lead to awkward consequences if you still have  plenty of classes left with that person.

That first step can now be taken for you, with the help of the app Tinder. As the name suggests, the app is a way of lighting a fire between two people, allowing users to either “like” or pass on a person based on their pictures and biography. Based on the search radius you decide to set, finding your Tinderella can now be easier than ever.

This app can be enjoyable, and if used correctly could be a very useful way of finding singles in your area. But there are some guidelines that you should follow if you want to be successful in the Tinderverse.

Keep it light

Obviously, Tinder is an app that is used for fun, based exclusively on visual first impressions, so don’t expect a stimulating conversation with others on it. For most, it’s a fun escape while sitting in a boring class — there aren’t too many people looking for anything serious to come out of a match. It’s best to keep your expectations light.

Keep things close

Be realistic about the search radius you set. Keeping it within a couple of kilometres will increase the probability that the person will actually want to meet you. Not many are willing to travel 30 minutes to meet someone they have met over a dating app — unless you are silky smooth on the chat. The chances of finding the cute guy or girl living on your street are much higher with a lower radius, and a familiar face helps a lot.

Keep an open mind

Don’t be too stressed about Tinder. This app should not be the only way you meet people. There is often a big difference between who you are online and who you are in person. Using the app as a way to keep your love life fresh and exciting is all well and good, but you shouldn’t look at it as a replacement for face-to-face interactions.
