Although Justice Grant Huscroft clearly showed that the provincial government contravened the “University Acts” by infringing on universities’ autonomy with the SCI, is this really the final nail in the coffin for the policy, or will the government be stubborn and drag taxpayers in an even longer battle with Ontario’s university students?
The Ontario provincial government’s attempt to appeal the court decision concerning the Student Choice Initiative (SCI) will go forward over a year after it was struck down in Ontario’s Divisional Court.
Ontario’s Divisional Court has unanimously sided with student groups in a legal challenge against the provincial government over the Student Choice Initiative, deeming the policy unlawful, according to the Canadian Federation of Students.
“We want to send a strong message to Doug Ford and his government that some of his policies are not actually policies that are supported by students and workers on campus,” said Anne-Marie Roy, one of the organizers of the protest.

Post-secondary students across the province held a walkout today, leaving their classes and staging rallies to protest recent changes to education policy by the provincial government.
Currently, the SFUO is crashing on different friends’ couches and futons throughout the city until she can “get back on her feet.” According to one friend who wishes to remain anonymous, the SFUO is not a great roommate.
The SFUO’s role in this transition period was first laid out in their interim agreement with the University of Ottawa’s administration.

An independent investigation spurred by recent releases of Fyre Festival documentaries, has revealed that student unions were behind the whole thing. Samantha Odd and Angel Shawarma, the lead investigators, held a press conference earlier this week.

The motion ultimately failed to pass during the annual general meeting of the CFS due to a lack of time for debate. It was referred to the CFS’ national executive but the results of the vote are unknown.
On Nov. 5 the University of Manitoba Student Union (UMSU) passed a motion recognizing individual reproductive freedoms, preventing reproductive coercion, and prohibiting graphic materials by its student groups.
The SFUO had no right to delete these comments. After all, this is not their personal Facebook page where they can just block whoever disagrees with them (@JimWatsonOttawa). At the end of the day, the people they disagree with are still people they represent.
This year’s Day of Action will focus on universal accessibility to postsecondary education for all students and eliminating systemic barriers that do not allow for people to access education, educational justice, and public education.
The board saw a motion regarding just cause for absence of certain members at the Dec. 3 meeting that read: “Be it resolved, that the VP finance, president, and VP equity give the board of administration just cause for their absences at the December 3 meeting.”
It’s long past time to say it clearly and loudly: the SFUO needs radical reform, and it needs it now.
Following question period, Caruso presented an emergency motion to the board which would have the SFUO officially oppose Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline and Enbridge’s Line 3.
Now, should a student union wish to revoke its membership from the federation, a petition calling for a referendum on defederation must first receive signatures from 15 per cent of its members.
The BOA should pass the proposed motion and therefore approve that a review of the relationship between the SFUO and CFS is launched. This would ensure that we can gain information to see whether or not we are getting the best quality of services and resources from the CFS.
Most students don’t understand what’s going on, so by organizing such an official sit-down session on campus they could answer important questions like: why is free tuition important?
