The Board of Directors of the University of Ottawa Students’ Union met on Thursday night where they approved the agenda for the upcoming General Assembly, to be held on Nov. 7. They also passed a motion to support an upcoming on-campus rally against cuts to OSAP and the introduction of the Student Choice Initiative.

There is no “right” versus “wrong”. There are policies that occur that must be discussed and debated. These policies are important to people here in Canada, but also to the lived experiences of Palestinians and Israelis. However, we must have the opportunities within an academic institution to fully discuss and explore these implications of policy.

The reality is, Israel, like every single country in the world—including Canada and the United States—is imperfect. A nation always has room to improve, from its justice system to its economic equality to its treatment of minorities; and Israel is no exception to that.

One thing we’ve learned from the lone successful GA—students are more likely to show up if they feel like their presence will make some kind of impact.

Each GA since its institution in Nov. 2014 had failed to meet quorum, save for the latest assembly on March 14, where over 280 students filled Marion Auditorium, many of whom were in opposition to a motion passed by the Board of Administration (BOA) to raise the executives’ salaries by 18 per cent, or $6,200.
