Sept. 23 was a big day for 44 Canadians. During a ceremony at Ottawa’s Rideau Hall, Governor General David Johnston presented the Order of Canada to a large, and very impressive group of recipients.

Wednesday’s new inductions included CBC personalities Rick Mercer and Eleanor Wachtel, actress and filmmaker Sarah Polley, singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk and a collection of the country’s most prevalent jurists, scientists, historians, surgeons and more.

Former Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa, Caroline Andrew, was also among those inducted during the ceremony. Andrew was recognized for the contributions she has made as a leader in Canadian academia and social activism. Just one of her many accomplishments is co-founding the U of O’s Women’s Studies program.

Since the Order of Canada’s creation in 1967, more than 6,000 people have received the prestigious award. Those invested into the Order are chosen based on their outstanding achievements, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.
