Women’s volleyball

The Gees had an action-packed weekend with their games on Nov. 23–24 against the York Lions and Nipissing. After giving up their first loss of the season to York on Nov. 3, the Gees beat them 3–2 Saturday and followed up the win with a 3–0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday.

The win against the Lions, who have been undefeated up until this weekend, was an important one for the Gees.  The Gees’ aggressive offence is encapsulated by fourth-year social science student Myriam English’s rankings, who currently stands at the top of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) for points-per-set and is second for kills-per-set.  She netted 27 kills against York, alongside her twin sister, fourth-year social science student Kelsie English and her 17 kills.  The match played out 19–25, 25–14, 23–25, 26–24, and 15–11.

Although the second game against Nipissing wasn’t as close, the Gees did not relent in their aggressive play, putting out more than twice the Lakers’ total kills.  The Lakers crumbled under the pressure, losing 25–17, 25–13, and 25–10.

Swim team

The swim team was busy Nov. 21–23 with three back-to-back swim meets: the University Cup, which hosts Canada’s top universities, the Canada Cup in Toronto, and the Brock Invitational in St. Catharines.

Despite placing seventh out of eight, the Gees women’s swim team performed exceptionally well at the University Cup, beating out both Western and Guelph—two of the strongest teams in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA).  First-year rookie Caitlin Hodge kept up her strong performance from the previous weekend, placing third in the 400-metre freestyle.

In fact, Thursday wasn’t her only success.  In the Canada Cup, she medaled twice: in the 800-metre freestyle on Friday where she inched out of a second-place finish by 4 milliseconds, and in the 400-metre freestyle on Saturday.

On the men’s side, fifth-year Adam Best managed an eighth-place finish with his finish of 51 seconds 2 milliseconds in the 100-metre freestyle—a fairly strong time, which just goes to show how strong the competition is this year.

At the Brock Invitational on Nov. 23, rookie Marie-Pier Daigle and second-year Carolynne Godon both placed first in the 100-metre backstroke and the 200-metre backstroke respectively.
