Women’s volleyball on eight-game win streak
The Gee-Gees continued their rampant win streak over the east Ontario University Athletics (OUA) division with their Nov. 29–30 weekend games in Kingston. They faced Queen’s first on Friday, and although it was a contested match, the victory went to the Gees 3–1. They followed suit with another win Saturday against the Royal Military College (RMC) women’s team in a cleaner 3–0 game.
During their Friday game, the Gee-Gees felt the ice-cold pressure from the Gaels. The Gees, in their classic fashion, got off to a quick start and took the first set 25–18, and although they lost their second 22–25, they came back in the most contested third set with a 29–27 win in the third set.
Fourth-year social science students Kelsie and Myriam English both brought their A-game. While the former shelled out 17 digs and points during the game, the latter dished out 17 kills, 7 service aces, and 24.5 points overall. They weren’t the only superstars on the court, however, as second-year nutrition student Sophie Chenail maintained a .492 kill percentage to boot with her 9 kills and 12 points.
Their Saturday game exposed the team’s strong hold on the basics. Although RMC came out strong, the Gees put them down 25–20 in the first set and maintained their lead. It was a good end-of-semester win for the women as they head into finals and off to their respective towns for the holidays.
Men’s hockey has nine-game win streak halted by Queen’s
The Gee-Gees came back from their early 1–5 deficit in the season with a series of nine victories. They played games against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Queen’s on the Nov. 29–30 weekend.
The team’s Friday game against UOIT started off with a 4–0 lead in favour of the Gees in the first period, and followed suit the rest of the night ending in an 8–2 victory for Ottawa. The Gees also went four for eight in terms of scoring on power plays.
“Despite not playing our best collective team game, it was our team’s individual talents that gave us the advantage in the game,” explained Gees’ head coach Réal Paiement. “We found a way to win and to control the game.”
Fourth-year history major and forward Stephen Blunden also managed to scoop up a hat trick during the Gees’ game against UOIT.
However, Saturday did not bode as well for the Gees’ win streak. The undefeated Gaels stormed onto the ice after the Gees managed the first two goals in the game, responding with their own two goals before the end of the second period. Like clockwork, the Gaels scored a third point in the third, and the Gees matched them.
The game went to a shootout, and much like the Gees’ ninth victory, the shootout persisted until the ninth round when Queen’s Yannick Laflamme finally netted a puck, preserving the Gaels’ now 10–0–5 undefeated record.
Women’s hockey clips the Ravens
Coming off three losses, the Gee-Gees women’s hockey team was out for a win against the Carleton Ravens on Nov. 30. Unlike the men’s game, the women won the game 4–3 in the sixth round of shootouts.
The game did not begin well. The Gees were down three points by the halfway point of the second period. This did not stop them from coming back strong and tying the game up 3–3 by the end of the second period. Although Vickie Lemire managed only two assists in those three goals, she played a key role in the victory when, in the sixth round of shootouts, she managed to plant the puck behind the Ravens’ goaltender Tamber Tisdale in the net.
The win leaves the women’s team with a 6–5 regular season record heading into exams and the holidays.
