Steve Johnson on winning the OUA title in 2014: “It truly was a team effort,” he said. “We are more of a team this year than perhaps other years. Other years we may have had more individual talent, but collectively this team has really performed well all season.”
The Gee-Gees came up a little short on the weekend, and ended their otherwise fantastic season with two tough losses and a fourth-place finish in the league.
The Gees took the first step towards a national title on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they faced off against the Laurentian Voyageurs in the OUA quarterfinal.
For the first time in seven years the Gee-Gees defeated cross-town rival Carleton University and won their first Wilson Cup in 20 years. And no one shined brighter than Johnny Berhanemeskel.
“I’m proud of this team,” said head coach Lionel Woods. “We get to go to nationals and learn from this loss and see if we can be tougher next weekend.”
Their recent weekend wins against Concordia mean that both the men’s and women’s hockey teams will be heading into their respective league’s playoffs in a couple weeks.
