The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees will advance to the semi-finals at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships tomorrow afternoon after defeating the University of Cape Breton Capers 3-1 during today’s quarterfinal game.
The game started off quickly for the OUA gold medalists, with first-year striker Kayla Jones scoring on the Capers after only three minutes of play. Jessica Furtado of the Capers returned the goal, tying the game 1-1.
Shortly after Krista Draycott scored a goal from a corner kick, a perfect shot which sailed into the top corner of the net untouched by defenders or the Capers goaltender.
Finally, nearing the end of the second half of the game, rookie striker Vanessa MacMillan scored the Gees third and final goal of the game—a shot that hit the top corner of the Capers net—bringing the final score of the game to 3-1.
Julia Francki of the Gees and Chelsea Currie of the Capers were named players of the game.
Today’s win secures the Gee’s a spot in tomorrow’s semifinal game. Viewers can catch the game at www.cis-sic.tv at 4:30 PST, 7:30 EST.
