THIS ARTICLE OUTLINES ACTIVITIES FEATURED IN THIS YEAR’S ITERATION OF WINTERLUDE THAT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN PARTICULAR MAY BE INTERESTED IN.
With a new semester beginning for students at uOttawa, and the winter season reaching its most trying months, Winterlude 2026 is an event that cannot be missed. If you’re anything like me, the temperature and atmosphere of the season makes you want to do nothing more than lay in bed on your phone. This festival proves to its tired and cold citizens that Ottawa winters don’t suck, and that this city and season have something special to offer. Running from Jan. 30 to Feb. 16, Winterlude is an annual outdoor winter festival taking place in Ottawa-Gatineau. It is designed to bring the community together with fun activities that embrace the beauty of the season. Here are some events that students in particular should be aware of, and consider adding to their schedules in the next few weeks.
Confederation Park
The main location for activities in Ottawa are occurring in and around Confederation Park, just a short walk from U of O’s O-Train station and various bus stops. Crystal Garden may be the most memorable event of Ottawa’s Winterlude festival. Winterlude is best known for its intricate and charming ice sculptures that can be seen scattered throughout the wider downtown area, including the Byward Market, and into the Glebe as well. Taking a brisk walk in the fresh air is one of my personal favourite study breaks, and these walks are sure to be brightened up with the ice sculptures seen just steps away from campus. Check out the free ice sculpture exhibit, along with winter-themed animations and interactive displays that will remain up for the entire span of the festival.
It doesn’t just end there though. This park hosts an array of events throughout the festival period, like Cold Yoga for example – an outdoor yoga session meant for those of any level, that will help to clear your mind from school stress. What’s more, to find out if you are cut out to be the next Canadian icon, Sparks street will also be hosting a Giant Karaoke, complete with DJs and vibrant decor. Bring your friends along and sing your heart out!
Jacques-Cartier Park
If you reside in the Gatineau region, there is a great deal for you to explore as well. Gatineau’s take on Winterlude, Snowflake Kingdom, will operate through the Northern side of Jacques-Cartier Park. This area will transform into a winter playground, complete with events and activities for all ages that promote winter fun, like sports and games, a ferris wheel, and performances.
As a university student, I know that I and many others often miss our childhood days at the park with our friends. Well, at Winterlude there will be the chance to try a giant snow slide, along with other outdoor games like giant foosball and Snow Hook, that will bring you back to the good old days of outdoor play and childlike wonder. And if you’re looking to dance or sing, the park hosts an outdoor Live Performance Stage, which is decked out for the winter season and consists of an abundance of performances related to music, dance, and more.
Perhaps the most enticing event for university students this Winterlude is Afterslide – a winter party atmosphere created specifically for young adults, also located in Jacques-Cartier Park. With an illuminated ferris wheel, tube slide, DJ and dance performances, and more, this event is perfect for crushing the winter blues by partying with your friends in frosty fashion. There will also be free hot chocolate and coffee from Tim Hortons, and soup offered by AdoGatineau. What more could a student want than a free party complete with free food?
If you’d like to access any of the Gatineau events from Ottawa, the festival offers a free shuttle bus service, the Sno-Bus, with routes going from downtown, to Byward Market, all the way to Gatineau. With free transportation, there’s really no excuse to skip out on what Winterlude has to offer all throughout the area.
Winterlude 2026 is packed with something for anyone who’s trying to beat cabin fever, and this was just a preview to all that will be offered during the festival. Make sure to check out the festival’s website for more information on specific dates, times, transportation, accessibility, and more. Don’t buy into the winter hate – grab your friends, and enjoy some winter fun!
