An overview of the publications we’ve seen throughout the year

Starting in the fall semester, the Fulcrum went around campus interviewing different student journals around the University of Ottawa campus. As the academic year comes to an end, we would like to present a recap of all the publications we have met with.

  1. Common House

This online literary magazine started as an experiment within the Department of English at the University of Ottawa and is now an international publication always welcoming contemporary Canadian and international creative writing. The biannual magazine is always open to having new people contribute their time to the organization either as members of the editorial staff or as contributors to the magazine.

To learn more about Common House, visit their website or their Instagram page.

  1. Clio

The History Students’ Association’s peer-reviewed magazine, Clio, is a bilingual publication that started out in 2013. The magazine focuses on building students’ academic careers by giving students in the faculty of arts the opportunity to grow and expand their academic network as well as gain professional experience. It also allows students opportunities to present their paper to professors and fellow students who are interested in the topic of their paper.

Interested in getting in touch with Clio? Fill out the contact form on the HSA website, follow the HSA for updates about Clio on Instagram or speak with a department head at the Students’ Association of the Faculty of Arts (SAFA).

  1. yPolitika

This student-run publication of the International, Political and Policy Studies Student Association (AÉÉIPPSSA) is a bilingual journal that accepts submissions on a rolling basis as long as they align with the journal’s theme. With this publication, students not only get published in the library’s open journal system, but they also get the chance to participate in the essay competition at the annual Academic Conference hosted by AÉÉIPPSSA. The finalists of the competition present their work to a panel of AÉÉIPPSSA professors and are eligible to win a cash prize.

To learn more about yPolitika, drop by the director’s office hours at FSS 2002 or email yPolitika at director-directeur@ypolitika.com or editors-redacteurs@ypolitika.com.

  1. Ignio

The International Development Platform and Undergraduate Peer-Reviewed Journal is an organization that accepts formal and informal submissions as long as it’s related to the publication theme: development studies. The bilingual publication is eager to have students participate as editors, contributors or members of the Ignio steering committee.

Interested in getting in touch with Ignio? Send an email to ignio@aedsa.ca, check out their Instagram page or their LinkedIn profile.

  1. OSURJ

The Ottawa Science Undergraduate Research Journal is a bilingual publication on campus that is also officially a club endorsed and sponsored by the Faculty of Science. In addition to providing opportunities for publication, OSURJ partners with other organizers and clubs at the university to provide conferences or other opportunities for students to present their work to an audience. OSURJ builds a nice scientific community, helping students work together to highlight each other’s work. It is also very multi-disciplinary, accepting publications that are from different avenues of science including science policy, psychology, science commentary, science anthropology and other similar topics.

Some ways to contact OSURJ are through their Instagram account that’s always active, and their website

  1. Telfer Business Journal (TBJ)

The Telfer Business Journal is an official club that is affiliated with but independent from the Telfer School of Management. TBJ encourages contributors to explore any topic they are passionate about as long as the subject matter is related to business. The journal publishes three times a week with special editions of articles occasionally being released on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For more updates as well as details about how to get involved with the Telfer Business Journal, reach out to them on Instagram, through their website or on LinkedIn.

  1. UJPPS

The Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Policy and Society (UJPPS) takes the form of a course at the faculty of social science. The course code for UJPPS, FSS 4100, is taught by Professor Daniel Stockemer. Students in the course come up with a topic for a special issue, send a call for submissions to a couple hundred universities, learn skills that equip them to handle the publishing process, and split into editors and reviewers once the submissions come in. Overall, the process gives students the opportunity to develop a critical mindset and be a part of producing knowledge rather than just consuming it.

The best place to find out more about UJPPS is their website. Their next call to submissions is in September and their previous publishings are available on both their website and through a Google Scholar search.

  1. CLG

Culture and Local Governance is the academic journal of the Centre on Governance on culture and policy. It accepts submissions from students and professionals all over the world at all times and publishes those submissions between two to three times a year. Besides this, the bilingual academic journal occasionally hires bilingual University of Ottawa students with a background in communications or journalism to assist with the editing and formatting of approved papers for publication.

If you are interested in learning more about the CLG, you can check out their website.

  1. IJHS

The Interdisciplinary Journal of Health Sciences is a bilingual peer-reviewed journal. Run by students, it is always open to students looking to contribute to the journal as writers, editorial staff or in other capacities. The journal accepts submissions on a rolling basis and publishes its volumes annually.

If you are interested in learning more about IJHS, you can take a look at their website or email rdeonand@uottawa.ca

These are just a few of the publications at the U of O. Speaking to all of them, it is clear that getting involved in academic publications at the undergraduate or graduate level is a great way to gain publishing experience, improve your resume, find graduate school/scholarship/grant applications and form a community with like-minded people in your area of study.

Do not be shy about taking advantage of these opportunities because you will benefit a lot from them and they would be more than happy to have you!
