Should have stayed home and watched Sharknado on Netflix again
I never thought Mary Shelley, gargoyles, and the battle of good versus evil would come together in one movie. I’m not entirely sure they should be together in one movie. And yet, we have I, Frankenstein.
Having seen the trailer, I expected the movie to be ridiculous, but when Miranda Otto’s character introduced herself quite seriously as Leonore, the queen of the Gargoyle order, I realized I hadn’t fully prepared myself for this level of silliness.
The film was fun, the 3D effects were well used, the cast was strong, and maybe that’s what threw me. I love a good B-movie, but with I, Frankenstein, I felt like potential was thrown away on something that might have been great, or at least OK.
The movie is an adaptation of a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux. Modern, twisted takes on Victorian era characters have done well as graphic novels and one can understand why a studio might want to capitalize on a niche market. However, like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen before it, the movie adaptation isn’t that compelling.
It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but if you’re going to pay to see a movie in theatres, it shouldn’t feel like it’s on the same entertainment level as a shark film starring Tara Reid.
