‘Can’t Go On’ is a departure from Noise Hotel’s first album, with a heavier sound and smoky power chords

Ottawa indie rock band Noise Hotel released a new single entitled “Can’t Go On” this month,, available on all streaming platforms. This is their first release with their new lineup consisting of Eric Montpool (lead vocals/guitar), Christian Strong (bass), Matthew Scharfe (rhythm guitar), and Brendan Vandepol (drums/production).

“Can’t Go On” is a departure from the Noise Hotel’s first album “Poolside Fantasy,” released in August of this year. The single’s sound is heavier, with Scharfe opening the track with smoky power chords. The light beachy sound from their earlier releases is absent, replaced with a darker ambiance reminiscent of the Arctic Monkeys in the 2010s.

New member Vandepol is at his best with the production of the single. Montpool’s vocals can be heard very clearly and Strong’s bassline drives the rhythm section. Lyrically, the Noise Hotel described the track as exploring the “pitfalls of a messy situationship,” which is something all students can relate to.

The Noise Hotel hosted a single release party on Oct. 16 at The Rainbow in Byward Market, joined by Joey Bird, a Montreal-based artist, and Arenas, a Toronto-based indie rock band. They hosted a second release party in Toronto at The Cave on the night of Oct. 18, supported by Lovely Little Kitsch and Living Room for Small. The core members of the band have graduated from Carleton University and are now based in the Greater Toronto Area, so the band has performed across Ontario throughout the summer and into the fall.

With such a successful summer filled with the release of their freshman album, “Poolside Fantasy”, Noise Hotel is poised for a winter of live shows across Ontario. Hopefully the “Noise Boys,” as they’re dubbed in the Ottawa music scene, will continue to stop by Ottawa as they rise to fame in the Ontario indie world. Maybe we’ll see them next year on stage at Bluesfest?
