Jan. 11 marked the 200th birthday of Sir John A. MacDonald, long regarded as the leading father of Confederation. That said, the man is perhaps more controversial these days than the majority of today’s world leaders.
Canadian pride
There must be something that makes Canada worth being proud of though. Perhaps our health care? But in fact, most other democratic countries have similar or better levels of national health care. Despite our constant bragging, we’re thirtieth in the world for health care. Twenty-ninth is Morocco.
[P]atriotism and nationalism are constructs and are therefore, by definition, manufactured. They are ideas that we think about, ideas to which we emotionally attach ourselves and connect our life experiences. They are ideas that help us understand who we are.
