Students from Carleton University and the University of Ottawa have asked the provincial government to open up university and college campuses in order to improve students’ mental health and academic performance.
“The university is aware of the petition and is looking into the matter,” says U of O manager of media relations, Isabelle Mailloux-Pulkinghorn.
Not all students start on an equal playing field even with the option of universal, pass or fail grading. For many students, especially international students, online learning has brought challenges that other students don’t have to face.
“We don’t know much about the mental health of our workforce in this country. The more this crisis goes on, the more these issues will be compounded,” said Ivy Lynn Bourgeault, a U of O professor and holder of the University’s research chair in gender, diversity and the professions.
“There’s increased stress and anxiety among students because of the disruption and uncertainty caused by COVID-19,” said Rita Notarandrea, ceo of CCSA.
“While I have no doubts that the creators of the petition mean well, this particular issue reminds me of a similar call to action for mandatory Indigenous content courses in universities. Many of the issues raised in this regard also apply to these suggested mandatory anti-racism courses.
