The Ottawa Heritage Building is lighting up red this week in honour of Dyslexia Awareness Month, bringing attention to the learning difficulty that impacts an estimated one in ten children in Canada.
City council voted unanimously on Wednesday to declare an affordable housing and homelessness emergency, making Ottawa the first Canadian city to do so. The motion was brought by Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney, who is council’s liaison for housing and homelessness.
“It’s something that maybe they don’t feel like it’s a pressing issue in their lives, but to everyone, it should be,” says U of O student Demetre Kontos.
Pierre Richardson’s exhibit will be open to the public at city hall until Sept. 24.
The Karsh Award is presented every two years to an Ottawa artist who displays great skill in photography and dedication to their artistic practice. It is named in honour of brothers Malak and Yusuf Karsh, talented Ottawa-based photographers active in the mid-1900s.
On Sept. 17, the Canadian Association for Equality (CAFE) hosted their first national conference at the Ottawa city hall, where they were met with opposition from the Revolutionary Student Movement (RSM).
On Sept. 8, young entrepreneurs from across the city, including many University of Ottawa students and alumni, joined members of the community at city hall to pitch their business models as part of the seventh annual Startup Garage Rally.
Dorimain said the march had two goals, to raise money for BLM Toronto and to get politicians to say they support the movement. “We were asking our mayor and councillors to support what’s going on over there because it also happens here in Ottawa,” she said.

The free event was facilitated by Canadian Film Institute (CFI) staff, active supporters and sponsors, local embassy partners, Canadian filmmakers and actors, alumni of Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, and local film fans.
