Claudette Commanda, an Algonquin Anishinabe from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation in Quebec, has been appointed chancellor of the University of Ottawa. She will succeed Calin Rovinescu following the end of his second mandate later this fall.
The University of Ottawa unveiled a new statue by David General, a member of the Six Nations of the Grand River, on Oct. 28, celebrating the long and continuing history of the Anishinaabe people on this land.
The elder, Claudette Commanda, is an Algonquin Anishinabe from the Kitigan Zibi First Nation and a U of O alumna. She is also the first person to hold the position as an elder in residence at the university.
