The Gees and the Rams were both nationally ranked teams coming in and both battled for every point during the match. The game came down to the final seconds, during which the Gees pulled away with one final basket to secure the win.

It was made official on Feb. 19 that the two sisters are the best in the province after the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) recognized Myriam English as the most valuable player in the east division, and awarded first all-star team spots to both Myriam and Kelsie English and an all-star rookie team spot to Kaly Soro.

Juggling academics, basketball, and fatherhood is not an easy task, but Thomas manages. He says it takes “a lot of focus and a lot of balance,” and that he has to “find a time and place for everything.

The 18–2 Gee-Gees men’s basketball team represents the University of Ottawa in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) while the 22–1 Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team represents the University of Arizona (Tucson, Ariz.) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.

The Ottawa Sports Awards (OSAs) recognize amateur athletes as well as senior and veteran coaching members for excellence in their respective domains in sport, and have been operating annually since 1953.

“Our top eight on the men’s and women’s are as good as anybody. Now it’s just a question of seeing how the rest of the team stacks up against the best in the OUAs,” he said. “That’s the fun part. We don’t know and we’re going to find out.”

“Our response was two weeks of training,” said Gees-Gees head coach Lionel Woods, explaining their strategy after previously losing to Ryerson. “This match was the result of our response; we got together, talked about it together, and figured it out together.”

“The reason we signed him is because we feel like he has a chance to compete strongly,” said Brock Sunderland, assistant general manager for the RedBlacks. “We liked not only what he did this year, but what he did in 2012 as a wide receiver.”

Off the court, Derouin is an approachable character with an amiable allure, which earns him the trust of his athletes and sometimes complaints from Andy Sparks, head coach of the women’s team. However, Derouin isn’t quick to smile.

This game marked the second Capital Hoops win for the U of O women since it began in 2008. Although the Gees do not have a great record for the Classic, the U of O has finished ahead of Carleton in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) finals and at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) nationals for the past several years.

Following the game, I asked myself, “Why isn’t that school spirit present on our campus?” I then told myself that our passion for the Gee-Gees brand is just as good as ever, it was just an uncommon occurrence.

With a growing interest among University of Ottawa students, a fourth-year engineering student Brett Parres and alumnus Jeremy Kearns have both headed a new Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) club that has been playing in the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) against other universities.
