Gee-Gees Men’s Rugby team nabs RSEQ banner — the first conference championship of the program.
The Gee-Gees men’s rugby team returned to the field on Saturday (Sept. 16) for a 4 p.m. match against the Université de Montréal Carabins.
On Matt Anthony Field, the Gee-Gees men’s rugby team took the lead in the second half to defeat the Montreal Carabins and improve their record to 2-1 this season.
While scrolling through the Gee-Gees website, some may notice that not all varsity teams play in OUA. In fact, nearly half of the school’s varsity teams play in RSEQ, USports’ Quebec university sports conference. But why?
When James Flemming joined his high school’s football team in Grade 9, little did he know that his first impressions of the team would lead him on a path to being one of the U of O most recognised rugby players. Flemming discusses the path that led him from a Belleville locker room to Matt Anthony Field.
Coming into the game, the Gees had an astounding 8–0 record, scoring 373 points and only allowing 35 points against throughout the entire season.
“It’s a really promising for the program. It makes us feel pretty good that we can foster a successful rugby culture for men at the university without being varsity.” -Stuart Locke
At the home opener this past Sept. 6, the stands were packed with Gee-Gees fans and the men were ready to play.
