In November, Yvan Mongo was named the captain of the Gee-Gees men’s hockey team. Since then, Mongo has become the face of many initiatives on campus, and has continued to make an impact throughout the university.
Yvan Mongo, a Black hockey player on the University of Ottawa men’s hockey team, along with his head coach, Patrick Grandmaitre, has created a special club called “Mongo’s Brave Buddies” that aims to help young BIPOC hockey players.
The Gee-Gees men’s hockey team was back on ice on Thursday night for Game 1 of their OUA Eastern Conference finals with the Concordia Stingers. Facing a hot goalie, the Gee-Gees were dominant and outshot their opponents, but after two periods Patrick Grandmaitre’s boys were down by one.
In one of the best years for Gee-Gees teams and athletes as a whole, there was a big crop to choose from, but only a select few could be chosen.
The Gee-Gees opened up the 2018-19 season on the road against their crosstown rival Carleton Ravens on Oct. 11.
