Mr. the Panda claims that the university wasn’t offering him what he was worth

At a press conference held Tuesday morning, Pedro the Panda — the trophy awarded to the winning team at the homecoming game between the University of Ottawa and Carleton University — announced that he was cancelling any appearances outside of Sunday’s football game. This includes pre-game tailgates and celebratory afterparties.

At the press conference, Mr. the Panda explained that negotiations with both Carleton and the U of O fell apart. “I was being low-balled by these institutions,” the Panda said, tears rolling down his golden face. “I know what my work is worth, I know what I’m worth. But neither university wanted to pay me what I’m worth.”

Pedro the Panda has maintained a contractual agreement with both the U of O and Carleton since 1955, which outlines which public appearances he’s paid for, security details, and drink tickets. The contract is re-negotiated on a yearly basis, to ensure he’s visiting both student populations equally, regardless of possible win-streaks.

The Panda first meets with the representatives of the respective universities for the next contract the day after each Panda game. However, since October 2023, negotiations have been stalled and disagreements have arisen from each party.

“My teams and I have been going back and forth with these universities for almost a year. Last Friday night, I was sent a final offer for my contract, which was the lowest amount I have ever been offered,” said the Panda. “Of course I responded, ‘LOL’, because it was laughable.”

Pedro the Panda confirmed he will only attend the game, as well as a personal lunch with the winning team. “I have to say, the U of O’s team has better options, but we go to the same pub every time. When I close my eyes, I can see the Fathers & Sons menu.”

Panda planning committee member and U of O alumni, Taylor Gates, spoke to the Tomato about the failed negotiations. “I cannot disclose many details about the negotiation process due to confidentiality for the parties involved,” said Gates. “But our team tried to be as accommodating to Mr. the Panda’s requests, no matter how outlandish they appeared — such as paying him a living wage, and food allowance.”

The annual Panda Game will bring students to TD Place on Sunday for a 12 p.m. kickoff. “The university takes pride in its homecoming programming, and especially its football team,” continued Gates. “We hope the students, alumni, and community members have a great weekend!”
