The creative outlet for anyone passionate about business
In exploring publications around campus, there have been several interesting discoveries. From Common House Magazine to OSURJ, every publication is dedicated to creating a space that allows students to express themselves on various topics in a way that would not have been possible in a classroom.
The Telfer Business Journal (TBJ) is no different in this regard. With the only restriction being that the subject matter be related to business, writers are free to explore any topic at the TBJ. Current editor-in-chief of the Telfer Business Journal, Matthew Montoni commented, “I want the writers to just enjoy and be passionate about what they’re researching.”
This passion could translate into a vinyl collector writing a financial analysis about the changes in music sales and its impact on businesses. A ski enthusiast could write about the impact of international students on Canadian winter sports businesses and anyone could explore the income boom liquor stores, bars and clubs experience during 101 week.
While Telfer Business Journal’s name has changed over the years, its core principle of developing a communal space for business practitioners has not changed.
TBJ, formerly known as The Market Mavericks, was founded in June 2023 by Alexandre Breton, the current president of the TBJ, to be a ‘blog-like’ platform that served as a community for business students and professionals. As the community grew, the need to clearly communicate its purpose and mission through its name drove the decision to undergo an official rebrand. The Market Mavericks became the Telfer Business Journal.
“As we kept growing, people kept asking us about our mission and purpose,” Breton said, “The Market Mavericks doesn’t really communicate much directly.”
Currently, the Telfer Business Journal is an official club that is affiliated with, but independent from, the Telfer School of Management. It receives club funding from the university and uses that funding to host events like study sessions, writing workshops and guest speaker events.
The club has both executive and writer positions. Executive positions are only open to students in the Telfer School of Management. However, the writer positions are open to any student at the university.
“We really stress that you do not have to be a writing expert or have done journalistic writing in the past to write for us,” Montoni stated. “As long as you’re interested and willing to learn, you’re more than welcome to apply. “
The journal runs two major recruitment periods for writers: one in September and the other in January. However, writers onboarded in September are free to stay until the end of the academic year.
TBJ is currently accepting club liaisons until February 14, 2025.
“If you like a creative outlet, or an outlet to share your writing, this is a great way to do it.” Montoni remarked, “on a deeper level, if you want to kind of get exposure, like a lot of business students are concerned with, this is a good way to do it. Showcase your research and writing abilities by posting an article. Those articles can also go on a resume or LinkedIn bio.”
The journal publishes articles three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with special collaboration articles occasionally being released on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All articles are published on the journal website.
