The bar of your choosing can make or break a date, pressure is on to choose the right one for you and your date.
It’s a Friday evening, and you have a date planned with the person you have been talking to for less than a week. Mutually, you know little about each other: both students, burdened with schoolwork, looking to take the edge off and have a lovely evening. So where should you go?
Of the minimal choices for bars on campus to meet for date night, here is the lineup:
Located on 244 Laurier Avenue East, at the intersection of Nelson Street, is the newest bar in Sandy Hill. With an atmosphere that always feels like a good time, and filled with good conversation. The Nelson is a budget-friendly pub with craft cocktails, a great selection of beer, and great appetizers. The Nelson can be a bit noisy, so if you were to ever run out of things to say, the crowd gives a good opportunity for eavesdropping.
Building community since 1994, Nostalgica has earned a reputation at the University of Ottawa. Nestled right next to the Morisset Library, Nostalgica is in a convenient location for a post-study date. The Pub has a great selection of drinks and food, and offers a classy setting of academics. A great place to connect on an intellectual level, where conversation is insightful and deep, rather than shallow and boring.
The newest student bar on campus, the Nox Eatery, located on the second floor of Minto, is a great place to watch the Gee-Gees play hockey. Nox is the home of sports spectating at the U of O. So if you and your date have a taste for competition and athletics, here would be a great place to propose some hot takes and argue the evening away (in a playful way of course).
Saving the best for last! Father and Son’s has been serving the Sandy Hill Community since 1967, and they have been doing it with pride and unbeatable prices. F&S has a great atmosphere for meeting someone for the first, second, third, or 100th time. There is a reason why it is a fan favourite amongst University of Ottawa students. It’s not much of a fancy cocktail spot, but it is filled with cheap beer and a high-calorie per dollar dinner menu. The patio is very lively during the warmer months, and the inside is cozy and homey during the colder months.
These four bars each offer different atmospheres, menus, and personalities— depending on which type of social connection you are trying to achieve, it is crucial to choose the right bar. Now ask out your crush, significant other, or your homie if you don’t have a date, and head to the bar of your choosing to enjoy the evening!
