WHICH EVENT WILL STUDENTS DECIDE ON DURING THE WEEK OF VALENTINE’S DAY?
Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is built for those in romantic relationships, but it fails to acknowledge the many ways relationships and love can look. Many recognized Student Governments (RSGs) at the U of O are hosting events this week to acknowledge the many facets of human connection, giving Gee-Gees opportunities to meet their next romantic interest, a new friend or even build a new professional connection. Here’s a sneak peek into some of this week’s events on campus that are inclusive to all interests and types of relationships!
Shoot Your Shot Bar Night
Hosted by the Mechanical Engineering Student Society (MESS) and the Psychology Students’ Association (PSA), students can shoot their shot with another on Friday, Feb 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the University Tavern.
Dante Casetta, Director of Events at MESS, detailed that students will be utilizing a website, developed by MESS, designed to split students into categories of compatibility.
Students are asked to take the quiz before the event begins. The first quiz focuses on personality, and the second on elements of attraction. Students are then organized into groups based on results, and will be assigned a dedicated colour to wear to the event so organizers can easily pair up the compatible students.
Casetta emphasized that MESS is “Trying to create a good atmosphere that’s not a lot of pressure” where students can have fun and focus less. Students interested in this activity can get their tickets for $5 here!
Heartbreak Karaoke
If you’ve been waiting for the chance to sing your heart out, Heartbreak Karaoke at the Nox Eatery, locked inside Minto, is waiting for you on February 11, at 9 p.m. Ran by the Criminology Students’ Association (CSA), the Economics Students’ Association and PSA, Gee-Gees can show off their talents while singing classic heartbreak karaoke songs.
Evan Macaulay, Vice-President of Social Affairs with the CSA, highlighted that “You are there to try and meet someone, try and recoup that heartbreak, or you are there to absolutely sing your lungs out after, you know, what might be a bad breakup, a generational fumble, whatever it happens to be.”
If this is something that’s speaking to you, Macaulay encourages all students to show up in their best runway attire and take to the stage.
Galentine’s Industry Night
If an academic event is more your style, the Galentine’s Industry Night could be a perfect fit. Hosted by MESS and the Multidisciplinary Design Student Chapter, students can spend the evening networking with professors and industry professionals.
Natalie Parker, Biomedical Mechanical Representative for MESS, emphasized that this event will focus “on Valentine’s Day as an event for empowerment and supporting women in engineering and bringing them together.” The event will begin with a panel, including representatives from Nav Canada, and will later involve stations where students will have the chance to craft while chatting with those in the field.
Parker notes this gives students the opportunity to bond with those experienced in their career over an activity. The stations available include wine glass painting, colouring, card making, and trivia with various food and drink available. This event will be hosted on Monday, February 9, at 6:00 p.m. located in the STEM building, room 117.
Eco-Valentines
Wanting to make change in your relationship with the environment and local politicians? The Sustainability Centre is teaming up with Amnesty uOttawa and uOttawa Climate Justice to give students a “unique way to celebrate your love for the planet.”
Students can head to the University Centre Agora on February 13, between 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to learn more about environmental issues and write valentines letters to their local leaders to push for change.
Various U of O RSGs are working to spread the love of Valentine’s Day to all Gee-Gees, providing a little bit of everything for everyone. Whether students are looking for someone special, to vent about a heartbreak, or make a new professional connection or progressive change, there’s an event for all. Students can explore all the elements of love this week at the University of Ottawa
