The men’s Basketball faced off against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday in what was sure to be a close game. The Gees looked to continue their three game winning streak against a 4-6 Toronto squad. If the Gees took this game it would put them ahead of the Queen’s Gaels for second place in the OUA East.

The Gees would get the first bucket of the game from a corner three from forward Matthew Smith, followed up by another Smith jumper from the mid-range. Ankit Choudhary would rack two clean assists giving the Gees the lead. The Gees being the team with the most three pointers made were struggling to get the three ball going in the first quarter. As the first quarter came to an end, the Gees trailed 20-15.

Choudhary would drain a three for the Gees first bucket of the second quarter, but Blues guard Quarry Whyne was doing it all for the Blues on both defence and offence. Gees guard Dragan Stajic would get a steal, and after spinning for a fake layup would dime it to Choudhary for his second three of the quarter.

From an inbound, the Gees ran a play which found Jacques-Mélaine Guemeta for a wide-open layup, followed up by a Stajic three in quick transition. The Blues’ Simeon Jeffers would respond with a deep three well beyond the arch. The Gees Brock Newton would get a tough and-one layup. The Blues would finish off the half strong, putting the Gees down 44-37.

Guemeta would pop a three to start the second half scoring, backed up by a Choudhary three, and yet another Choudhary mid-range jumper, giving the Gees the lead 45-44. Guemeta was going insane, getting a quick catch and shoot three, followed by a steal and a transition layup.

On the heat check Guemeta knocked down another three, giving the Gees an 11 point lead out of nowhere. Rookie forward Owen Kenney was subbed on halfway through the quarter and made an immediate impact, knocking down two threes. The Gees would end the third quarter 69-58.

Gees forward Justin Ndjock-Tadjore would start the fourth quarter strong with a dunk, layup, and a free throw, increasing their lead immediately in the final quarter. Three minutes into the quarter Brock Newton would get a chasedown block putting it off the board, leading to a Guemeta transition layup. The Gees lead was quickly increased to 20 points with only six minutes remaining.

Guemeta knocked in another three with a dime from Stajic, checking out of the game with 23 points. Kenney would knock down another open three, putting them up 94-68. The big difference maker in the second half was the impressive efficiency from downtown for the Gees. The Gees would finish their road game against the Toronto Varsity Blues 96-77.

The Gees extended their winning  streak to four in an exciting game against the Blues.Guemeta had himself a night, knocking down five of his 11 three-pointers, with 23 points, and a staggering six steals. Dragan Stajic led the team in assists with eight, earning an additional five steals.

Small forward Ndjock-Tadjore had a good all around game with 18 points, four assists, and four rebounds, and Brock Newton defended the glass with three blocks. Rookie Owen Kenney went crazy off the bench, scoring 10 points from three threes and a free throw.

The squad defeated the TMU Bold 86-64 on Saturday before gearing up to play the undefeated rivals Carleton Ravens on Wednesday night at the Raven’s Nest.
