Dynamic Duo of McCarthy and Szczokin showcased terrific performances in a heavily taunting match

The Gee-Gees women’s basketball had gone undefeated this season until they faced the Brock Badgers this past Friday. Brock foreshadowed their 58-56 win by scoring the first layup and obtaining the game’s first two points, which would later come in handy to claim the match.

As we know, Brock took the initiative but relentlessly maintained the lead throughout the first quarter. Angeline Campbell and Oluwatito Akinnusi led the Badgers against Ottawa’s recognized scorers, Allie McCarthy and Alissa Provo.
However, the Gee-Gees struggled to keep afloat during the second quarter, scoring only eight points, three of which came from Natsuki Szczokin’s three-pointer expertise, ending the first half 32-22 with the Badgers leading.
The third quarter started with the garnet and grey increasing the pressure and trying to create some advantage during the second half of the game; with 19 points scored, seven of those coming from McCarthy herself, the old Gee-Gees could be recognized on the court, reducing the Badgers’ lead to 47-41.
The fourth and final quarter came around, and with the Ottawa team initiating an offensive streak, it came down to these last minutes. A valiant effort gave the Gee-Gees a one-point advantage, rallying the team. Szczokin scored two three-pointers back-to-back and then returned for three other points this quarter.

However, the Brock Badgers pushed through and delivered an extremely offensive match, placing them in the lead with 5 minutes to spare and another four points to score, while the garnet and grey missed the initial two points the Badgers started with.
It was an extremely tense game in which both teams showed their potential and effort to obtain that win. However, for the Gee-Gees, it was their first loss of the season, which did not affect them much as they turned their engines back up and beat the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday 74-53.

You can catch their next home game against McMaster this Friday, 6 p.m. at Montpetit Hall.
