Sabrina Benaim, most well-known for her poem, “Explaining My Depression to My Mother,” which has over 3,000,000 views on YouTube from her performance at the 2014 National Poetry Slam in Toronto, was the featured poet for the night. Benaim performed poems about anxiety, heartbreak, and one of her inspirations, Beyoncé.

According to the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) “2015 Hollywood Diversity Report”, which analyzed the top 200 film releases and all of broadcast, cable, and digital television programming from 2012-2013, nearly 40 per cent of the U.S. population was non-white in 2013, yet made up only 16.7 per cent of lead roles in theatrical films and 6.5 per cent of lead roles in broadcast scripted television.

FROST 2016, a concert headlined by ILoveMakonnen and DJ Mustard that took place on Jan. 16, was hosted by the SFUO in collaboration with AVX Live, JUMP! 106.9, Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa, and Carleton University’s Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA).

Although the title may be off-putting to some, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend might be the most feminist show on television at the moment. It continuously critiques inequality, especially the sexist tropes that are common to most romantic comedies. The show also delves into other issues, such as mental illness, all while staying light-hearted with numerous catchy songs each episode.

Throughout the play, Tessler portrayed herself, as well as the other people who were along for her mental health journey, including her parents and doctors. She demonstrated many typical experiences one goes through when dealing with mental illness, but still kept it uniquely her own, with singing and dancing, as well as personal anecdotes of how she dealt with the experience.

The main thing Abebe hopes students take away from Compassionate Conversations is a cultivated sense of compassion for others, and the realization that everyone is struggling on some level, whether they express it outwardly or not.

Claude’s blog will culminate photos with short reflective stories as told by citizens of Ottawa to introduce the lives and journeys of individuals within the community. “Even the most benign realities can be fascinating, and I would like to create my own twist to them,” said Claude.
