Although it’s easy to criticize the U.S. while Kaepernick’s story dominates headlines, the problem isn’t contained to south of the border.

Ottawa-Vanier Liberal member of parliament, Mauril Bélanger, passed away on Aug. 16 at the age of 61, after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Bélanger attended the University of Ottawa in the 1970s, serving as the 1977-79 president of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO).
The university’s 2016-17 budget featured tuition hikes of three per cent for domestic students—the highest allowed under provincial rules—and up to 15 per cent for international students, as well as a deficit of $4.9 million.
Mauril Bélanger, Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ottawa-Vanier region, which the University of Ottawa is located, has been diagnosed with the incurable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Bélanger told the Citizen he plans to continue to serve as an MP.
“The one thing I do, I always encourage students 18-24 to vote, no matter who they’re voting for, I think its primordial that they do.”
Yes, shameful sexist attitudes and policies were prevalent throughout Canada’s history. But covering up the mistakes of our past in a shroud of political correctness will not help us do better in the future.
