This year’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) track and field national championship in Edmonton on March 6–8 was one for the record books and the podium for four of the University of Ottawa’s athletes.
It was a tale of two games for the Gee-Gees, as the first half showcased the Huskies’ fight as well as some jitters from the Gees, while the second was the complete reverse.
A historic season for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men’s basketball team came to a close Sunday afternoon.
Lachance competes for the University of Ottawa’s varsity swimming team and practises two hours a day and nine times a week. A swimmer’s practice schedule is different than any other athlete’s training.

The Gee-Gees women’s basketball team vaulted to the top spot in its division after defeating the Carleton Ravens at the 2014 Capital Hoops Classic, while the men’s team struggled to recuperate against the top-ranked Ravens.
The Cavalry Awards are a series of honours given by the Fulcrum to various varsity athletes for outstanding performances and sportsmanship or eye-catching moments. It’s a simple way to let the athletes know we recognize their talent and appreciate the struggle they bear, in addition to being students, to make us proud fans. Although we’d love to give each one an award, we only have so much print space, so we had to make some tough decisions. The candidates aren’t nominated, but handpicked by the sports staff and volunteers at the Fulcrum and reflect our opinions.
First-year public international affairs student Angela Tilk has moved to the capital this year for her master’s program at the University of Ottawa—and for basketball. Tilk had great success at Ryerson University during her undergraduate years. She was known as the strong undersized post across the province. In her first year, she was awarded the Ontario University Athletics East All-Rookie Team, and then in the 2011–2012 season she was given the Second Team East All-Stars award.
Lionel Woods started with the Gee-Gees 25 years ago as the assistant coach and athletic therapist. He never played a game of volleyball in his life, but took on the head coaching position in 1992 and has never looked back.
The Gee-Gees remain undefeated and seem likely to maintain their number two ranking following their two games on the Nov. 22–23 weekend beating Waterloo 98–60 on Friday and Laurier 89–68 on Saturday night.

Since Derouin started the Gees have moved up from a .500 regular season record to winning the bronze medal last year at the national championship.
The Gee-Gees took down the Carleton Ravens while fighting breast cancer to raise $1,000 in their Nov. 9 game. Both teams were able to bring out a large crowd to support their breast cancer fundraiser.
The Gee-Gees’ basketball season began for both the men’s and women’s teams Nov. 1–2 with two back-to-back games against the Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers.

The Panda Bowl’s return was nothing short of exciting. The stands were filled, since the event sold out the 4,000-seat capacity by Friday at noon, with more than 800 standing tickets sold in surplus. The game was preceded by a reunion of alumni players from both Carleton University and the University of Ottawa’s football teams, who led the game with an honorary kick-off. The air was full of cheers from both Gee-Gees and Ravens fans.
The new Sport Services’ commercial portrays varsity athletes unequally.
“This tournament is a great opportunity for us to play teams that aren’t in our league and to compete against different styles of teams.” she said. Beel-Hammond thought the most exciting thing this weekend was playing as a team.
MEET CENTRE-MIDFIELDER Julia Francki, a third-year communications student, and forward Lili Wong, a fourth-year human kinetics student; both play for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s varsity soccer team. These two dynamic women have a great friendship on and off the pitch that began due in part to their love of soccer.
