Twins Myriam and Kelsie English do everything together. Both are third-year social sciences students who plan on becoming elementary school teachers, and both play on the Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team.

Personal trainer Nick Haince and Spartan race veteran Vanessa Lebrun, a U of O graduate, sat down with the Fulcrum to talk about what it means to train for one of these events and then actually go through it.

“A lot of the time when you’re in jail, you get selfish,” my dad said to me. “The selfish feeling is that you wish you could see your family. You miss them so much and you just want that comfort. In actuality, I had to think of your feelings too. I wasn’t worried about you missing me, or whatever else, but actually fearing for me. Had you guys come to Millhaven and seen that shit, it would’ve scared you. It would’ve kept you up at night. It was the smell—it all smelled like metal.”

After having a phenomenal season of 14 consecutive wins and making it to the top 10 in Ontario University Athletics (OUA), the Gee-Gees earned this weekend’s success. The championships gave them the opportunity to play against western conference teams they hadn’t had the chance to play before.

To say that this past week has been a good one for Karina Krueger Schwanke would be an understatement.

It is described as the art of motion, but in layman’s terms, it’s that cool sport where people run from point A to point B doing amazing flips and stunts along the way.

“These players have been playing for fifteen or more years, so they’re aware of those dangers,” said hockey coach Yanick Evola. “We just try to talk to them and give them a couple of exercises here and there to help prevent [concussions]. It happens quite a bit.”

I can say with authority that when it comes to whipping someone into shape, this guy knows what he’s talking about. He sat down with the Fulcrum and explained the most common mistakes that people make when starting a new workout regimen.

It’s totally different than [playing in an] association, because you can actually see people on campus, and we’re around each other most days of the week. There’s that whole mentality of student athletes. We understand that we’re balancing school and sports.

The 90 University kitchen has been closed to the public in an effort by the University of Ottawa’s Housing Service to provide residents of the complex with greater access to the facilities.

“We just have to wait for the word from them,” said Elliott. “The last word we got was that there will be no dome this year, but we don’t know if that’s going to change or not.”

One in 10 students on the University of Ottawa’s campus have used the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa’s (SFUO) Food Bank, according to recent statistics released by the SFUO.

As a rule of thumb, if you don’t care about something enough to personally organize a fundraising event for that cause, keep it off my Facebook, and stop guilt tripping me into “liking” it.
