In the “highest turnout ever recorded for a by-election in UOSU’s history”, four seats on the executive committee have been filled, including Delphine Robitaille as union president and Daniel Thorp as communications commissioner.

The University of Ottawa Students’ Union’s (UOSU) Board of Directors (BOD) met for their monthly meeting on Sept. 17. Called to order at 1:07 p.m. and adjourning just after 5:45 p.m., the meeting was the shortest BOD meeting of the term thus far.

There is an important distinction between governance and politics. By governance, I mean the administration of the union, the fulfillment of its obligations. In terms of governance, the UOSU seems to be doing alright. By politics, I mean the human aspect, the making-people-care. In terms of politics, the UOSU seems to be doing much worse.
Despite efforts, turnout remained low for this by-election, with Sana Almansour receiving just 1,278 votes out of a possible 36,855 voting members. Chloe Bergeron and Harneet Cheema were each only eligible to be voted in by members of the faculty they were vying to represent.
The UOSU called a by-election on Sept. 12 for an Oct. 12-14 voting period. The by-election will seek to fill vacant positions on the University Senate as well as UOSU’s Board of Directors (BOD) and Executive Committee. The seats remain vacant due to a lack of candidates in the general election held in March of 2021.
Squat, a raccoon who was fined $150 for speeding on an electric scooter, has just been elected as the UOSU’s first safety commissioner.
