“We found this day to be representative for us. We are not going to celebrate the coming of the Europeans, because that was taught to us during our school years. I remember when I was a kid, I used to sing these anthems … congratulating the invaders for having come and discovered us and civilize[d] us,” said U of O professor Marcelo Saavedra-Vargas.
The Ottawa Heritage Building is lighting up red this week in honour of Dyslexia Awareness Month, bringing attention to the learning difficulty that impacts an estimated one in ten children in Canada.
Last month, the University of Ottawa made it mandatory for incoming students, faculty, and staff members to certify their vaccination status using the COVID-19 Vaccination Declaration online tool, whether they intend to come to campus or not.

The grounds of the motion for the proposed class proceeding allege, “[t]he University of Ottawa received at least two complaints in or about 1995 by former patients of Nadon, regarding his inappropriate conduct of a sexual nature. The University of Ottawa failed to take appropriate steps to prevent the improper conduct from occurring again, including requiring the dismissal of Nadon from the UOHS.”

Evolved from Orange Shirt Day, this federal statutory holiday intends to honour Canada’s commitment to the 94 recommendations for truth and reconciliation and provide all Settlers of Turtle Island a day to reflect and educate themselves.
“Climate change is already happening and people are already suffering from it, and it’s really scary that no system is changing at all,” said U of O student Phillipa Macdonald.
The UOSU called a by-election on Sept. 12 for an Oct. 12-14 voting period. The by-election will seek to fill vacant positions on the University Senate as well as UOSU’s Board of Directors (BOD) and Executive Committee. The seats remain vacant due to a lack of candidates in the general election held in March of 2021.
Since the shift to virtual classes, cases of academic fraud have increased due to proctoring limitations for tests and exams, and increased use of the internet for all academic activities.
In theory, professors are supposed to plan and adapt their courses to make sure students who are in both learning spheres get the same level of attention and education. Nevertheless, this has not always been the case and the university has taken its fair share of flak from both students and professors.
Despite a reputation for apathy towards elections, many young people have gotten involved in the upcoming federal election.
“We are very grateful for the therapy staff, first responders, nurses, doctors, and everyone on-site at the University of Toronto that did absolutely everything they could to help Francis. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Francis’ loved ones, teammates, and everyone he touched,” wrote Sue Hylland, in an email to the Fulcrum.
