Each break-up fills my heart with joy
Dear Di,
It’s a new academic year, and I can’t help but be happy about all the couples that are no longer together. Don’t get me wrong, I take no personal pleasure in their misery; well, I actually do. But only because I’m sick of having couples showing PDA blocking my path on sidewalks, in stairwells, and along hallways. The very least they could do is stand off in the corner and not make it awkward for everyone! The thought of not having to go through that for a while (at least until Halloween) makes me happy. Am I a grouch?
A Spatial Awareness Enthusiast
Dear SPE,
I sympathize with your plight. It can be totally annoying to be rushing off on your day and need to scootch by a couple making moony eyes in the narrow hallway near the Montpetit 200 classrooms. I hate to break it to you though, but autumn is the peak season for a new spark; the colder months are when many sweet college relationships are just beginning to bloom, so I doubt you will be getting the romantic reprieve you are dreaming of, at least not until June.
That being said, a simple solution to your problem is this: clear your throat, look them dead in the eye, and say, “excuse me, some of us have places to be.” Now it’s awkward for everyone, not just you.
Being unhappy with people obstructing pathways with PDA isn’t being a Grinch; it’s being unhappy that people aren’t respecting pedestrian ethics. Just don’t let the sight of young love ruin your morning commute, because someday, you just might be the person obstructing someone else’s path with your PDA.
Love,
Di Daniels
