Protesters moved tents Saturday; set up plywood barricades Sunday afternoon

At around 4 p.m. on July 7, student protesters on Tabaret Lawn erected spray-painted plywood barricades, blocking the walkway in front of Tabaret Hall. Sources tell the Fulcrum that the tents inside the barricades were moved yesterday, and following the arrival of the weekly community protest from the Human Rights Monument this afternoon, barricades were erected. Both police liaisons and U of O Protection Services were seen on site speaking to protest representatives around 4 p.m.

The barricade is part of a recent trend in escalations for Palestine happening across universities in Canada, and comes as the U of O encampment surpasses two full months of occupation on Tabaret Lawn, one of the longest remaining student encampments at Canadian universities. Encampments at the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, and McGill University were dismantled in the past week due to the threat of police violence.

Negotiations between student protesters and U of O administration have halted, as frustration with the slow progress of negotiations and threats of a trespass notice have grown.

This is a developing story. Updates on protest escalations will be published in separate articles under the series “2024 pro-Palestine encampment.”
