The ByWard Market: an integral part of the U of O experience

As a student at the University of Ottawa, I’ve come to appreciate the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of the nearby ByWard Market. This historic market, situated just a stone’s throw away from campus, is not just a marketplace — it’s a valuable resource that significantly enhances the student experience.

In this article, I delve into the perspectives of two individuals whose insights shed light on the invaluable role the ByWard Market plays in enriching the lives of students: Selwyn Croft, a devoted uncle who annually accompanies his niece to university, and Bedia, a fellow student who finds solace and excitement in the market’s lively atmosphere. Their perspectives highlight why the ByWard Market is more than just a marketplace, it’s an essential part of our student community.

For Selwyn, the start of each academic year at the University of Ottawa marks a cherished tradition. As a devoted uncle, he eagerly accompanies his niece on the journey back to campus. This ritual has become synonymous with exploring the vibrant offerings of the nearby ByWard Market. Croft’s annual travels to Ottawa are not merely about dropping off his niece; it’s an opportunity to immerse himself in the lively culture of this historic market.

According to Croft, “I think the market is very beneficial for our students as it shows diversity and different backgrounds. It allows one to travel through feeling very comfortable with their nationality. They get to wake up on a Saturday morning, get a coffee and baguette, and sit and watch the day go by.”

Croft’s sentiments highlight the market’s appeal beyond its role as a traditional marketplace. For students arriving at the university, the ByWard Market offers a welcoming introduction to Ottawa’s community spirit and diverse offerings.

For many students like myself, the ByWard Market is more than just a place to shop, it’s an extension of our campus experience. Bedia Buhaga, a 2nd-year psychology student at the U of O, shares her perspective of interweaving visits to the Market as part of her routine.

“I love spending my weekends at the ByWard Market. It’s a refreshing break from studies, with its lively ambience. Whether I’m grabbing a quick bite between classes or exploring unique boutiques, the market always offers something new. In addition to its close convenience, it also holds a ton of fun clubs and activities that fit best with many students’ social lives. Giving students a place to go that helps them break from the pressures of school can always be reassuring!”

As students, let us continue to embrace and support this beloved local gem, ensuring that future generations can also benefit from all that the ByWard Market has to offer. Whether it’s a quick stop for groceries or a leisurely afternoon of exploration, the ByWard Market remains an integral part of our university journey, shaping unforgettable memories and fostering a deeper connection to our city’s vibrant spirit.
