Fast forward to 2014, and the environment has completely changed. The streets are awash with advertising and genuine fervor for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In a way, it is a romantic event with the special relationship Brazil has with football, but this alone could not explain the incredible boom in interest for this specific World Cup. Many were intrigued by how South Africa would cope under the global spotlight with all its social issues and lack of infrastructure. Brazil bore a similar tale this year, only one crystallized with dollops of soccer mysticism.

These pre-season exhibition matches are a valuable time to learn and grow while gaining needed game experience against high-level squads on both sides. The Gee-Gees have to adjust to the size and speed of their American counterparts and NCAA teams will have to get used to a faster paced game, mainly due to a shorter 24-second shot clock.

In the first match of a four-game pre-season series where the Gee-Gees will face teams from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the garnet and grey defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 109-101 in a packed house at CÉGEP Champlain in Longueil, Que.

We expect ourselves to be the best nation at any competition, but must we tarnish the names of young athletes, some of which who just received their driver’s licence? Next time Team Canada does not perform well at the World Juniors, look at Twitter, web forums, and articles for comments about the tournament. The vitriol aimed at the young men who proudly represent us to the best of their ability is sickening.

MEET CENTRE-MIDFIELDER Julia Francki, a third-year communications student, and forward Lili Wong, a fourth-year human kinetics student; both play for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s varsity soccer team. These two dynamic women have a great friendship on and off the pitch that began due in part to their love of soccer.

Lumsden, who was born in London, Ont. and grew up in Toronto, enrolled at the University of Ottawa in 1972 and began playing for the Gee-Gees’ varsity football team.

Canada won a grand total of 44 medals this year, placing second behind France in the medal count. Fifteen of the medals won by Canada were gold, three of which were won by U of O athletes.
