“Last weekend was kind of a reality check, we realized we were going to have to work hard to maintain the level we’re at,”Durivage added, referring to the team’s two losses against York and Nipissing.

“Our response was two weeks of training,” said Gees-Gees head coach Lionel Woods, explaining their strategy after previously losing to Ryerson. “This match was the result of our response; we got together, talked about it together, and figured it out together.”

Lionel Woods started with the Gee-Gees 25 years ago as the assistant coach and athletic therapist. He never played a game of volleyball in his life, but took on the head coaching position in 1992 and has never looked back.

The ever-competitive Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team began its season with two victories this weekend, against Queen’s University on Oct. 25 and Royal Military College (RMC) on Oct. 27.

After having a phenomenal season of 14 consecutive wins and making it to the top 10 in Ontario University Athletics (OUA), the Gee-Gees earned this weekend’s success. The championships gave them the opportunity to play against western conference teams they hadn’t had the chance to play before.

“I thought we controlled the match,” said Woods. “Guelph played well and did good things against us and were trying some things, but we took away their favourite things.”
“It’s just an awesome feeling to start off the season this way,” she said. “I’ve played this tournament five years now, and we’ve never even come close to being this solid at the beginning of the year. It’s an ideal situation: you start the year with a win, you end it with a win.”
