Spotify Wrapped should be a national holiday.

Spotify Wrapped is always stressful, some get concerned with making sure it turns out perfect and others simply do not care about the feature. In this Ed-board Special, we interview some of our editors to see what they think about Spotify, wrapped, and music overall.

Finding out what someone is looking for in music is important. It can help people and streaming algorithms push new and exciting music that you actually might enjoy listening to. One of the best parts of Spotify Wrapped is the opportunity to discover new music. Here is what was on Edboard’s Spotify Wrapped.

Andrew (Sports Editor)

Andrew listened to contemporary country in 2023. His top artists included The Tragically Hip, Zach Bryan, Nickelback, Kanye West and Mike. Andrew prefers music that is nostalgic, notably “old country and rock music that I remember from my childhood is my favourite type of music. Beyond that, lyrics that you can sing along to. Bonus points if they’re meaningful (Zach Bryan, Mike), but even if they’re not (Nickelback) it’s still ok.” Andrew recommends  Zach Bryan the artist, particularly Zach Bryan the album for those who are looking for new music. He says  “It’s one of those ones you need to listen to in the proper order to have full effect.”

Ayai (Online Editor)

Ayai looks for good vibes in her music. Her top artists were Lecrae, Cruel Santino, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, and KB. Admittedly, these were skewed due to a Spotify hijacker (her sister also uses the account). She says “I think my music taste is so all over the place. It really just depends on my mood”. For music recommendations of the year Ayai suggests Anomaly by Lecrae and Subaru Boys : FINAL HEAVEN by Cruel Santino. Ayai loved the wrapped feature and also loves “ Receiptify. I look at it almost every month to see how my music trends change.”

Amira (Managing Editor)

Amira has always been a sound person. They stated “I’m listening for stimulation rather than lyrics or emotional reasons. Spotify is pretty good for that because it lets you control the quality of sound as well as how you queue it. I can just queue up a bunch of songs with their shuffle features, Spotify’s algorithms are pretty good for matching vibes except for Discover Weekly. The musicality itself, like certain rhythms and tempo.” Amira was slightly embarrassed that their top artist was 5 Seconds of Summer, the band has been their top artist since middle school. They said “But like, my second artist is the composer of the Persona games, the soundtrack is really stimulating and fun but also helps me focus. Yeah, I think it’s funny.”

Pavel (Videographer)

Pavel brings a practical experience to his music listening. He saysBecause I played music, I can hear a lot of things in a song and I can appreciate a lot of the effort that artists will put into doing things. Like those pages on Instagram that are dedicated to finding samples the people use.” As a result Pavel’s top artists are artists who are passionate about the way they sound, like Kendrick Lamar. A highly specific artist in Pavel’s wrapped was from a video game. He says “My favourite game ever is Kid Icarus, there’s these songs in there that’re like high intensity and then some Spanish guitar and then they’re in the middle of like a rock interlude. God that’s so good.”

Daniel asked a brilliant question to end the interview. He asked “If I were an alien from no-music-land and you were entrusted with showing me what music was, what albums would you pick?” Pavel responded “ I’m gonna cook with this one. Grae by Moses Sumney, Freudian by Daniel Cesar, or Igoy by Tyler, the Creator.” Amira said “Mad Villainy by MF DOOM, Wasteland Baby by Hozier, Dirty Computer by Janelle Monae, or Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge by My Chemical Romance.” Daniel concluded “Discovery by Daft Punk, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, or In Rainbows by Radiohead.”

Hopefully Edboard’s Spotify Wrapped inspires new musical adventures for you.
