The Gee-Gees women’s rugby team have won the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) championship for the fourth year in a row, defeating the University of Laval in a hardfought game.
The University of Ottawa women’s rugby team lit up Matt Anthony field on Sept. 23, soundly beating the McGill Martlets 116–0. According to the U of O, this is a team record for highest-scoring game, and their first game to break 100 points.
Since she’s taken over as head coach of the Gees in 2013, Boyd has succeeded in bringing the team one step closer to a national championship every year.
Coming into the game, the Gees had an astounding 8–0 record, scoring 373 points and only allowing 35 points against throughout the entire season.
After a stunning, undefeated run to the national final, the Gee-Gees women’s rugby team fell just short of their goal, returning to Ottawa with a silver medal and the pride of the entire school.
It was a hard-fought battle, but the Gee-Gees prevailed, proving why they’re the best team in their conference and perhaps the nation.
The Gees absolutely obliterated last place Bishop’s on-route to a 75-0 victory, closing the regular season 7-0.
As playoffs begin looming on the horizon for the Gee-Gees women’s rugby team, they are hitting postseason form at the perfect time.
The match wasn’t a blowout victory, but it was a showcase for the team’s commitment to defence.
By no means does an 11-point victory mean that there’s concern surrounding the power of the Gee-Gees this year. However, it does provide another storyline to watch for in upcoming games.
With their extremely attainable goals set in place, the team seems prepared to face whatever this season might throw at them.
A victory means that the Gees were crowned the national bronze medalists, an improvement on last year and the highest finish in team history.
Gee-Gees managed to eke out the tough 25-17 win for the conference championship crown.
With the win at home, the team officially clinched the top spot in the RSEQ standings ahead of Concordia (6-1-0) and Laval (5-0-2).
The StFX rugby team has four national championships to their name, the most recent coming last year. The match was a timely test for the two national powerhouses during their weeklong break from regular season action.
