The University of Ottawa has confirmed that mathematics and computer science professor Ivan Stojmenovic, 57, died in a car crash at around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 3.

His vehicle slammed into an overpass along the 416, flipped onto its side, and caught fire, according to CTV News. Paramedics told CTV that witnesses were able to pull Stojmenovic from the vehicle and administer first aid prior to their arrival. Stojmenovic showed no vital signs and was later pronounced dead. He was the only person in the vehicle.

Stojmenovic was known for his research on communication networks and algorithms and had published more than 160 articles on his studies. In 2008, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers named him an IEEE Fellow for an “extraordinary record of accomplishments” in data communication and wireless sensor technology.

Prior to becoming a tenured professor at the U of O, Stojmenovic taught at the University of Novi Sad in Yugoslavia (now Serbia) and the University of Birmingham in the U.K. He was also a visiting researcher and professor at numerous schools around the world.
