Although these stats may not matter to you personally as a healthy young adult, they certainly matter to the sick, the elderly, and the young we encounter everyday at school, at the mall, at the grocery store, and on the bus.

At the heart of musical variety is experience. To say you hate country after hearing one Taylor Swift song is simply ignorant. That would be like saying you hate ice cream after sampling one flavour of sorbet.

Contributors may have varying points of view on a topic, but through debate and discussion, a neutral consensus can often be reached. This is something foreign to many print publications, even academic ones.

Pointing out how many calories people consume is unnecessary. If someone makes the choice to indulge on a slice of pizza, they should be able to enjoy their meal without feeling guilty.

Also, just because you’re not kissing anyone in the near future doesn’t mean you can ignore your bad breath. When you speak up in class, it shouldn’t feel like an act of chemical warfare to those around you.

But the government can only go so far in protecting people from themselves. Unfortunately, there will always be people who become addicted to alcohol, just as there will be those who are addicted to gambling, eating, and other compulsive habits. Expanded alcohol sales will not change this, nor will government monopolies prevent alcoholics from obtaining addictive substances.

There are going to be people on your residence floor and in your classes who you just don’t get along with. There are going to be parties that aren’t great, people who don’t know how to kiss, and days when you just want to be in your bed back home. All of that is normal and can be just as good as the rest of it.

If students are expected to pay for the SFUO as part of their tuition fees, I believe that candidates should be screened before running. $30,000 worth of student money is not an amount to be taken lightly. That type of financial commitment from students deserves commitment from the candidates. While candidates may not have malicious intentions for resigning, students should feel confident that their vote is going towards someone who, if elected, will be dedicated.

You learn to appreciate the time you have together because you have to make every minute count. You learn to express your thoughts and improve your communication, you get more time to see your friends, you stay focused on school, and overall it can make your relationship stronger.

“Selling out” by allowing Apple to use your music in a commercial or by accepting a popular award isn’t a negative thing at all. In fact, it allows musicians to reach more people with their words and their lessons.

Presently, the OPS has released a public service announcement on the subject of frexting that will circulate across Ottawa throughout the fall. The advertisement promotes the use of Bluetooth technology while parkouring. It is hoped that this method—entitled hands-free running—will reduce the number of parkouring-related collisions and make the sidewalks safe again.

Ottawa might maintain the outwardly appearance of a well-disciplined princess, ably welcoming foreign diplomats with dignity and decorum, but the great thing about Ottawa is that this little princess hides special brownies under the floorboards and blasts angry, rebellious metal in her bedroom late at night when all the public servants have gone to bed.

The legislation also seems to assume that people with religious convictions are bound to bring them into the workplace. Well, news flash: our attire does not change our ability to be neutral, nor will removing our religious symbols strip us from our religious beliefs.

I believe the capture of any animal for entertainment purposes should be considered “morally unacceptable,” regardless of how intelligent we believe them to be. No animal should be forced, for our own entertainment, to live within a confined enclosure outside of their natural environment except if they are injured, sick, endangered, or abandoned.

In an ideal world, our expectations and depictions of each other would reflect equality. I realize we have quite a long way to go before that ideal becomes a reality, but videos like “Defined Lines” will get us there faster. Videos like “Blurred Lines” will only keep us stuck in the same harmful pattern we’ve become far too familiar with.

Like all stereotypes, ours limit our true potential. Depicting Canadians in one specific way draws a line in the sand between who can and cannot be considered Canadian. The more strongly we believe in the stereotypical model, the more we come to see real Canadians as different, as not belonging, as unCanadian.

Reports show that this institution would cost $50 million to shut down. From an economic point of view, closing it down makes little sense. From a scientific standpoint, we would be losing an invaluable research facility that helped maintain freshwater in Canada and shaped the way the world protects its freshwater supply.

It all happened so fast. One minute I was with my friends enjoying a nice burger from the cafeteria, and then suddenly everyone had been transformed into sarcastically dressed monsters eating quinoa from Tupperware
