The women’s basketball team rose to second in the OUA East standings, following a 71-57 win against the Laurentian Voyageurs.
One of the standouts of this year’s Capital Hoops Classic may not have been on the court, but rather in the stands. As it had been multiple times this season, the women’s basketball team played to a much smaller crowd than the men’s team.
The bronze baby will be heading to Saskatoon with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Huskies hammered the Brock Badgers in the finals of the USports women’s basketball national championships 82-64.
Putting an end to their 14-game win streak, the Gee-Gees dropped games to the Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders this weekend to close out the regular season. With an 18-4 record, Ottawa finished second in the OUA, earning a bye to the OUA quarterfinals on Saturday.

After losing a heartbreaking game against the McMaster Marauders by a score of 47-46 on Feb. 28, the Gee-Gees Women’s Basketball season has come to a brutal end.
The Gee-Gees dominated in basically every facet of the game, from shooting percentage to rebounding where the Gees led 53-41 and scored 14 second chance points.
Jump shooting was the key to success for the Gees in their win, but Sparks knows that down the road they will have to score in the paint.

The women’s basketball team had extra motivation to play hard at the Shoot for the Cure fundraiser game this year. Each season, the Gee-Gees take part in hosting a staple in Canadian University Sport (CIS), the Shoot for the Cure fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and research.
“Our best kids were not our best kids at the half, and we put a little on the line at halftime,” said head coach Andy Sparks. “We really talked about accountability, and how players have to step up in this situation, and I really thought in the second half they did.”

Transitioning into the next phase of the season, the Gee-Gees will open the second half by taking on the Carleton Ravens for the top spot in the OUA North. With the promise shown in midseason competition, there’s a chance the Gees could see a deep run into OUA playoffs, and possibly the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) final eight in March.
The Gees and the Rams were both nationally ranked teams coming in and both battled for every point during the match. The game came down to the final seconds, during which the Gees pulled away with one final basket to secure the win.
Gees basketball forward Terry Thomas has cemented himself in University of Ottawa history by breaking the record for most points scored in a single game.

This game marked the second Capital Hoops win for the U of O women since it began in 2008. Although the Gees do not have a great record for the Classic, the U of O has finished ahead of Carleton in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) finals and at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) nationals for the past several years.

The Gee-Gees fell short of the Carleton Ravens by five points on Nov. 30 with a back-and-forth lead change throughout the game. Ultimately, the Ravens pulled away and kept the lead with four minutes left in the game.
