Ottawa-Vanier Liberal member of parliament, Mauril Bélanger, passed away on Aug. 16 at the age of 61, after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Bélanger attended the University of Ottawa in the 1970s, serving as the 1977-79 president of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO).

What happens when a politician orders a murder to slip by in a vote? Comedy! And if Healey was aiming for a comedy he certainly succeeded, with a cast of hilarious characters, rants against Canadian Tire, a quest to find Triscuits, a splendidly performed awkward post-sex scene, rants against twenty-somethings and excellent use of the word “fuckwit.”

Ottawa’s judicial precinct is prime real estate for the establishment of cultural touchstones and it should be reserved for a building or monument that speaks to some kind of national experience. Instead, this area is going to be used to build something that will only divide Canadians along political and ideological lines.

We’re now at a point where the distance between the economic narrative and the economic reality is becoming increasingly unbridgeable. While Canadians may be tolerant of Harper’s tricks at the ballot box, they’re unlikely to tolerate him playing tricks with their wallets.

Life is about living each day to the fullest. Being able to wake up in the morning knowing that today is a new day with things to look forward to. Life is not about the suffering and excruciating pain that each new moment will bring.

Students actually do have a chance to make a difference. By voting for the Green Party, they have the opportunity to launch a champion of proportional representation into the running, and topple these eternal Liberal and Conservative fiefdoms that have dominated Canada for far too long.

If reform of our inordinately expensive system—which provides fairly mediocre care—is truly a priority for the CMA, they should give up the constitutional blame game and move towards actively advocating for positive change to Canada’s healthcare policy.
