There was no mistaking it for Betty DeGrudge when, on a blustery, snow-covered Thursday morning, she finished her long drive in from the outskirts of the city, crossing over the Laurier Avenue bridge and into University of Ottawa territory: students are such a pain-in-the-ass.
“We’re thinking of just not showing up to classes for a few weeks from December to January. That should show them.”
The Oct. 24 rally began at the University of Ottawa campus, where students, Indigenous groups, and other community members marched to Parliament Hill.
The rally was part of a nation-wide movement organized by Black Lives Matter (BLM) Toronto in light of the death of Abdirahman Abdi, a Somali man with autism who was killed by two Ottawa police officers in July 2016.
We don’t all have to be in solidarity with the students in Quebec. But we should at least be inspired by them.
