I’ve been at the Fulcrum for four years now, half of those as its editor-in-chief — it’s time for me to move on. However, before I do, I think it is worth reflecting on my five long years in student journalism. Apologies in advance, as this may get a little sappy.

The Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) sent out their final newsletter on April 10, alerting students that their doors have officially closed, and bidding students farewell.

To everyone who has supported us through each transition over the years, thank you for believing in student journalism.

Based on numerous trips to the U of O’s archives and interviews with alumni, this is the unofficial history of the Fulcrum.

“For some people it’s almost a joke, like ‘yeah yeah yeah I had my ADHD day yesterday … when we know … it’s so different to have it 24/7.”

“It’s a responsibility I think as healthcare providers to be able to understand and to be more sensitized to the different backgrounds your patients are coming from. I’m sitting here in your office, you’re my therapist, it’s not my job to be like ‘Well no, this is how immigrant parents think.’ You need to step up and educate yourself.”

In all my four years at this university not once has anyone mentioned the fact that we have a library! I’ve spent nights hunched over in dorm rooms, finishing essays by lamplight, paying for research from journals that I could have accessed for free?? I am livid.
